Advice Support Officer for Employability

We are looking for someone with an understanding of vocational opportunities and progression routes for care experienced young people to join our new Propel into Work service.

Salary and Benefits: £32,000 pro rata (£19,200 actual)

At Become we offer a wide range of employment benefits to all Team Members including generous annual leave, flexible working from the start, life insurance, and a rewards package which includes a Health Cash Plan.  We’re proud that we support our staff and want to see everyone who works here thrive in their personal and professional life.  You can see more of the benefits that we offer to everyone on our website.

Hours: This role is part-time (21 hours per week). Some flexibility on working pattern, we just request that main working days involve working 11am – 5pm, as these times are most popular for 121 support sessions with young people.

Location: We are currently hybrid working: our team is largely home-based with some in-person attendance and meetings expected at our central hot-desking location in Old Street, London. In addition, we envisage significant direct work and engagement with external partners to take place within Manchester and Greater Manchester, so ability to travel easily and frequently in the region is required.

About the Role

We are looking for someone with an understanding of vocational opportunities and progression routes for care experienced young people to join our new Propel into Work service. You will deliver advice, support and information for care experienced young people towards vocational learning and employment opportunities, and their supporting adults, via 1-to-1 support and employability workshops, resources on our Propel into Work webpages, and by connecting young people with volunteers to offer further career insights. Whilst this role will support care experienced young people in different parts of England, they will have a particular presence and visibility in Manchester and Greater Manchester, through attending events, some in-person delivery, connecting with local organisations, and engaging with volunteers from local corporate partners.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

As an organisation serving children in care and young care leavers we are keen to receive applications from people with experience of care. We are actively seeking to bring diversity of perspectives and experience, and especially welcome applications from those from racially marginalized communities. We ask all applicants to fill in an Equity and Diversity Monitoring from to better understand the diversity of applicants. This is anonymous and cannot be connected with your application.

We recommend that you read our Guide for Job Applicants to assist you with your application to Become.

How to apply

At Become, we ask interested applicants to answer several competency-based questions.

Your application and answers will be reviewed anonymously to ensure fairness and help remove bias from the application process. You’ll need to send us your CV but it will only be considered if you score well as part of the anonymous review.

To apply, please follow the link to our recruitment platform here.

To apply for this role, you will need to:

  • Provide us with a copy of your CV;
  • Answer the questions below in no more than 400 words per question, providing relevant examples to demonstrate how you meet the skills and experience required;
  • Complete the Equity and Diversity Monitoring Form (this is not compulsory but the information is very useful to us).

The competency questions we would like you to answer as part of your application are:

  • What is your motivation to work for Become and why are you interested in working to support care-experienced children and young people?
  • What barriers might care experienced young people face in accessing employment and apprenticeships, and how have you worked with young people to overcome these in previous roles?
  • How have you tailored your employability support to different young people to reflect their different identities, support needs, histories, experiences, interests, communication styles and more?
  • How do you successfully build rapport with young people and empower them to work towards their own career goals?

If you would like an informal chat before applying, please contact Clancy Dawson, Senior Advice & Support Officer for Employability, line manager for this role, at [email protected] and we will arrange a convenient time.

Please also tell us if there are any reasonable adjustments we can make to assist you in your application.

The deadline for applications to be received is 9am on Monday 21st October.
