What Is the Care Advice Service?

What Is the Care Advice Service?

It's our free, friendly, confidential advice service for children in care and care leavers.

When you call, you can talk about whatever you want. Maybe you want to find out about your rights, talk about something on your mind or just want someone to listen to you. That’s what we’re here for.

What can I talk about?

We’re here to answer your questions about the care system and your rights as a care-experienced young person.

We know that being in care can be confusing and you might be dealing with new words, processes and systems. It’s your life. It’s your right to know exactly what’s going on in it.

Young people call to talk about things like this:

  • how the care system works
  • your health and wellbeing
  • your rights in care and leaving care
  • getting the things you are entitled to
  • money worries and housing issues
  • your education and plans for the future
  • contact with your siblings and family members.

But you can talk about anything you like – big or small. We’re here to listen and help.

Who will I talk to?

Who will I talk to?

You'll speak to our dedicated Care Advice Service team.

They have loads of knowledge of the care system and the experiences of young people who are living through it.

They will listen and help you move forwards.

"I feel like a weight has been lifted. That’s the first time I’ve said all that and it feels good."

What if I’m not up for talking?

What if I’m not up for talking?

We'll go at your pace. If you’re not ready to talk about things, take a look at our information pages.

They cover common questions and issues experienced in care and when you’re a care leaver. We’re here when you are ready.

FAQs

Calling our Care Advice Service is free.

It won’t cost you anything to ring our freephone number from a landline or a mobile.

Yes, of course. Fill out the form or send us your phone number by email and ask us to call you.

If you call us but don’t get through, leave a message and we’ll call you back within one working day.

We know that picking up the phone can be a scary experience, especially when you need help. Don’t worry, we are here for you, and we want to make it easier.

Here’s what happens when you call. You’ve dialled our Care Advice Service on 0800 023 2033. Now a member of our team, picks up…

They will introduce themselves then ask a few questions about you so they can best understand how they can help you.

They’ll ask you to explain what you need help with. You’ll have the space and time to explain your situation/story saying as much or as little as you would like.

One of the team will then talk through how you would like to access help and how we can help you.

Afterwards, we will check to make sure you have got the help you need.

If you don’t want to talk, you could email us on [email protected] or fill in the form below.

Calls to the Care Advice Service are confidential. This means we will keep what you tell us private.

We’d only break this rule if we were worried that you or someone else was experiencing harm or at risk. Then, we might have to tell someone.

We’d do our best to discuss this with you beforehand. And would make sure you felt safe.

If we can’t help, we will do all that we can to put you in touch with other sources of support.

If you are calling on behalf of a child or young person, then we are happy to take your call. We’ll offer whatever guidance or information we can.

We’re working with Family Rights Group to help young parents and parents-to-be, who are care-experienced and involved with children’s services, to get the advice and support they need.

The Family Rights Group is a specialist organisation which support families whose children are involved with, or require, local authority services. Their website has lots of information and advice. They have a freephone helpline number, 0808 801 0366, which is open Monday to Friday 9.30am-3.00pm.

"Genuinely in the 10-minute call I had more help than in the last 18 months."

Our Care Advice Line is kindly supported by the National Lottery Community Fund.
