Oh, Wait a Minute

Written & recited by Florida

I was raised by three women who had different expectations of me, I choose to challenge them.

Oh! Wait a minute

Eat your food in such a way that it will not turn someone else’s stomach,
Try walking like a lady not the tomboy you are.
Be bullet proof.
Do not look too young but do not look too old,
Do not be too friendly but be approachable,
Do not love too hard but love enough,
So, you will not be alone in the long run.

Oh! wait a minute!
I adapt,
I reflect,
I adjust,
I mould,
Shouldn’t this be enough?
Be independent but not so independent that they will leave you.
Speak the truth but not too much truth, just the right amount after calculating who they are.
Work hard but not too hard,
So, you do not forget your family,
without you, they are nothing.
Make sure you cook, clean and set the table right.
Make sure you dress and act accordingly,
So, you do not embarrass us

Oh! wait a minute!
I adapt,
I reflect,
I adjust,
I mould,
Shouldn’t this be enough?
“Hold on my child we are not done”.
Do not curse but discipline with harsh tone,
Do not let the child speak unless spoken to.
Do not let your imagination run wild because that is not you.
Do not dream big because that is not you.

Oh! wait a minute!
I adapt,
I reflect,
I adjust,
I mould,
Shouldn’t this be enough?

Oh! wait a minute.
I know in my heart I am winning, I’m on a mission.
Praying on knees I cast down my burdens,
I choose to believe in healing.
I am made to be great,
I won’t stop till it’s done.
I will be who I’m meant to be without meeting your expectations of me.

So it is enough!
