Research into training and support for teachers working with children in care

Become is calling on teachers to share their views on the training and support they are provided with to work with children in care by completing our research survey.

This research is being carrying out as part of the 5 Nations, 1 Voice project, funded by The Big Lottery Fund. 5 Nations, 1 Voice is a joint initiative across the whole of the UK and Ireland where five charities work together to connect and support young people to influence policy and effect change.

You can complete the survey here.

In our last piece of 5 Nations, 1 Voice research, Perceptions from Care, we found that:

  • Many young people believed that teachers needed better training to work with them
  • Only 24 per cent of young people felt that their teachers understood what it was like to be in care

That is why we want to find out about how teachers are trained and supported to work with looked after children. We know that the right support at school can make all the difference to children in care, and that in order for staff to provide that they need the right support themselves.

This is a short survey that should take approximately 10 minutes. This work will help us make sure that teachers get the right support to work with children in the care system, which in turn will help children in care’s educational attainment.

Your answers here will help our understanding of the issues and help us make things better for children in care. This survey is completely anonymous and will not be used to identify you or your school in any way. At the end of the survey, there is the option to leave your contact information if you want to find out more about the work or take part in further research such as interviews or focus groups.

We have designed this survey to particularly consult teaching staff in England and Wales; however, we are also very keen to hear from teaching staff in the rest of the UK and in Ireland.
