Biking for Children in Care is an annual long-distance bike ride open to cyclists of all ages and abilities. The ride takes a different route each year and in recent years the team have biked their way across Germany, France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Wales raising vital funds for Become.
In June 2018, more than 50 Biking for Children in Care cyclists rode from Durham to Edinburgh, taking the Coast & Castles.
Each year, the cyclists are supported by a brilliant back up team who drive the vehicles, transport bikes and bags, provide emergency support, lunches and refreshment. Riders regularly include a number of social workers, lawyers and judges, who have worked with children and young people in care and understand the challenges they face.
In 2019, the Biking for Children in Care team will be heading to France to take on an amazing Ceppi di Lecco route. Beginning in Caen on 27 June, and continuing across country, the team will finish in Versailles 4 days later having taken in much of the beautiful yet challenging course.
Biking for Children in Care has raised over £700,000 for Become since 2002. Gill Timmis MBE, who founded and heads up the group, has worked in the field for almost 30 years, including as a social worker and Children's Guardian, representing children and advising courts on behalf of children who are subject to care and other court proceedings.
Gill decided to support Become because she witnessed first hand the effects of the care system on vulnerable children and recognised the need for the system to change. She explains: "Children in care face enormous difficulties and have to overcome numerous problems and disadvantages. Become is helping to address these issues by working with young people, supporting them, and campaigning on their behalf."
By supporting Biking for Children in Care – whether as a cyclist, support team member or a sponsor – you are helping to ensure that every child in care receives the love, support and opportunities they deserve to thrive.
