Aimee's poem

Aimee shares a poem she has written for Care Experienced History Month.

Aimee McDonald, 20, who’s in her 2nd year at University of Manchester studying Biomedical Sciences, shares a poem she has written for Care Experienced History Month. Aimee says the poem “is rooted in the idea that I think being care experienced can feel like nowhere feels like home.”

For years I’ve stayed at this place

But I’ll always be a guest

Show only gratitude and grace

Always in my Sunday best

Been sowing my own seeds forever

Riding the tail of the wind

Eternally following the promise of better

Yet to know if it exists

I’ll grow home from dreams and whispers

I’ll build a castle in myself

Learn ‘home’ like a beginner

Tend to my home’s health

And I’ll plait my home’s hair

I’ll sing her softly to sleep

I’ll treat her like she’s fragile

Because she’s just a kid

When she’s ready I’ll let her go

She has many adventures to live

I will not despair that she has gone

For I have built a home within

Aimee, your poem left me tearful, sad, guilty, but also optimistic that home and belonging can be a right not an Aspiration for care experienced young people. I am a social worker and I am going to share your poem at my team meeting to remind us all that belonging is a child’s right xx
