Casey talks on Annie Macmanus’ podcast

Casey Armstrong, 24, who is care-experienced, talks to Annie Macmanus on her Changes podcast about the care cliff

I had no idea how little time I’d have in care. The process of leaving care, most people aren’t prepared for it. All of a sudden you’re 18, you’re out in the world on your own. It hit me like a train and I completely fell apart after I was 18.

Casey Armstrong, 24, who is care-experienced, talks to Annie Macmanus on her Changes podcast about going into care aged 15, the happiness living with her second foster family brought her, and the extreme challenges she faced when she had to leave them when she left care at 18. Casey talks about the care cliff on the podcast.

Now Casey is in her second year studying astrophysics and physics at Dundee University. But her longed-for career in science, something she’d wanted to do since she watched a Stephen Hawking documentary when she was a child, nearly didn’t happen.

When I left care, college was the last thing on my mind. Just before my exams I had the worst suicide attempt and I was lucky to survive that. My subject I loved so much was another thing I failed at.
