Supporting Care Experienced Young People with Budgeting and Finance

What’s it about?

‘While many young people will learn about budgeting, bills and household management from their experience in the family setting, such as saving for holidays, discussing the cost of the monthly energy bill or coping with a broken boiler, children in care do not have the same family support structure to learn from, with an abrupt and major transition from the care system’.

This training explores the issues the care experienced young people and care leavers face regarding budgeting and finance, and what financial support they may be entitled from their local authority, including education, housing and other support. We collaborated with care-experienced young people, asking them what they wanted and needed to know about in this area.  The course also covers how professionals and carers can help them to understand topics like reading a bank statement, ways to save money, insurance, credit scores, dealing with debt and pay slips.

Course participants will learn about:

  • Some of the issues around supporting YP in care and care leavers with budgeting and finance. Including the Impact of the Cost-of-Living Crisis on CEYP
  • What a ‘Local Offer’ is and what the young person’s local Authority offers regarding finances to CEYP.
  • The rights and entitlements are for YP in care and care leavers, around education, housing, and financial support
  • Ways in which you can support young people in care and care leavers with Budgeting and Finance.
  • Some further signposting opportunities: further resources, grant-giving organisations, bursaries and scholarships
